Architectural Bake-Off in Fitzroy Square

There is so much going on in London!

I remember feeling that way about Toronto, too, it seemed that every single weekend there were at least 5 cool things to check out, new gallery exhibitions, concerts, trivia nights, film festivals, park parties. Other than a few die-hard extroverts, I think it's safe to say my friends and I fell into a content pattern of drinks, food, and movie nights with only the occasional out-of-the-ordinary Toronto experience.

As a newcomer to London, I'm focussed on keeping track of all the cool stuff and actually going to some of them! (Feeling very grateful for Time Out right about now!) Last weekend was the architectural bake-off in Fitzroy square, a competition that pitted 8 architecture firms against each other as they tackled the building of an iconic London structure using cake!!

Read on for all the delicious details and pics.....

We brought out visiting-from-out-of-town friends, and enjoyed a couple glasses of bubbly, handfuls of crisps, and even some leftover cake graciously given to us by one of the competing teams. I can confirm the cake tasted as good as it looked! We didn't stay till the end, but got up close to the WIP action.

This structure was my favourite. The team's concept was very cool, all about the features of London community and how the city brings people together and adds value to residents' quality of life. There were tunnels through the cake, to represent the underground system of subway tunnels, that were also used as bomb shelters through World War 2. The top of the cake had icing spray painted on using a stencil to represent the subway lines (there are a lot of them, by the way!), and lots of green spaces shown too.

This team built the Shard, and I would have loved to see the end product! A paper cone was the structure, cupcake pastry delights were affixed around the cone, and flat sheets of glassy icing were set to go on the outside of the building. I love how much fun they're having!

This team was doing an amazing job at building the Gherkin building - I am still very impressed!

And you can't go wrong with a complimentary glass of bubbly...or three!
